The main components that regularly move in a hydraulic cylinder are the piston rod and piston. The continuous back-and-forth motion creates considerable wear on the rod. This wear shortens the life of the seals in the cylinder, which in turn shortens the life of the cylinder.
All IPH cylinders are equipped with wiper seals, which literally wipe the cylinder as the piston rod brings it to the folded position. This wiping action ensures a small amount of dust is removed and helps keep the rod section inside the cylinder clean.
To extend the life of the seals in continuous contact with the cylinder, we require a high degree of surface finish on the piston rod. Traditional machining methods using conventional machine tools such as lathes cannot achieve the high surface finish required.
A high-quality electroplating of a smooth surface with the correct Ra value will ensure a longer life for the seal. If the required coating thickness is high (eg during maintenance), the piston rod must be reground before the coating process.
Coated piston rods need to be finished to produce surface roughness profiles to optimize rod and seal life without compromising the corrosion resistance of the coating.
